Kew accepts Ocimum basilicum L. in Lamiaceae

  Paragraphs

  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Ocimum basilicum L. as a species in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Kew gives the native range as tropical and subtropical Asia to northern Australia and describes the plant as an annual or subshrub associated primarily with the seasonally dry tropical biome. GardenSpecies uses that Kew record as the taxonomic and native-range baseline.

  • The species is now cultivated and introduced across a much wider geography. Kew lists many introduced occurrences, but those should not be merged into the native-range sentence. NC State and Missouri Botanical Garden use broader origin wording that reflects horticultural tradition and cultivation history; GardenSpecies keeps those source contexts visible without replacing Kew's current accepted distribution statement.

“Tender annual” is practical garden language, not the species' only possible life history

  Paragraphs

  • In temperate gardens, sweet basil is usually handled as a tender annual because frost and cool weather end outdoor growth. Missouri Botanical Garden lists the plant as an annual for garden use, while RHS describes sweet basil as a tender annual or short-lived perennial and recommends growing it as an annual in UK conditions. Kew's broader botanical description allows annual or subshrub forms in warmer climates.

  • These descriptions are compatible once climate is made explicit. They are not a reason to call sweet basil a cold-hardy perennial. A basil plant that persists in a warm, frost-free environment does not imply that the same plant will overwinter outdoors in a cool temperate garden.

USDA zones, RHS H1C and Missouri's annual-use range answer different questions

  Paragraphs

  • NC State currently displays USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 10a and 10b for O. basilicum . RHS rates sweet basil H1C, which in the RHS system means it can be grown outdoors in summer but is not hardy through cold conditions. Missouri Botanical Garden displays “Zone 2 to 11,” yet its profile clearly treats sweet basil as an annual and tells gardeners to transplant after frost risk has passed.

  • GardenSpecies does not average those labels or convert them into a single invented hardiness number. The practical message is simpler: basil needs warmth, is intolerant of frost, and is commonly grown only during the warm season where winters are cold.

Genovese, purple, compact and disease-resistant basils should not be flattened into one species description

  Paragraphs

  • NC State lists many cultivars under Ocimum basilicum , ranging from compact edging forms to taller culinary selections, purple-leaved ornamentals and cultivars selected for resistance to basil downy mildew or Fusarium wilt. RHS likewise emphasizes that many cultivars differ in size and colour. Retail names such as “Thai basil” can also be used loosely, so a common name alone is not enough to prove an exact cultivar identity.

  • That variability affects height, branching, foliage colour, leaf shape, aroma, flower colour, culinary use and disease response. GardenSpecies therefore avoids species-wide claims such as “all sweet basil grows two feet tall” or “all basil is mildew resistant.” When a trait matters, the named cultivar and its own source record are the correct level of detail.

Warmth and good light are central to productive growth

  Paragraphs

  • NC State recommends full sun and also records partial-shade tolerance, while Missouri Botanical Garden and RHS center their guidance on full sun. RHS additionally recommends a sheltered position, which is particularly useful in cool or windy climates because basil is a warmth-loving, frost-sensitive herb.

  • In practice, the best site depends on local heat, container exposure and cultivar. A warm, bright site usually supports strong growth, but plants in containers can heat and dry rapidly. “Full sun” should not be interpreted as permission to ignore root-zone moisture during hot weather, and “part shade tolerant” should not be stretched into a claim that basil thrives in dark indoor rooms.

Keep moisture reasonably even while preserving drainage

  Paragraphs

  • NC State calls for moist, well-drained soil. Missouri Botanical Garden similarly recommends moderately rich, evenly moist, well-draining soil, and RHS repeatedly emphasizes well-drained conditions for plants in containers or the ground. The shared horticultural pattern is steady access to moisture without a chronically saturated root zone.

  • A rigid watering timetable is therefore less useful than checking the actual growing medium. Container size, temperature, wind, plant size and soil composition all change how quickly basil dries. Water when the root zone needs it, then allow excess water to drain. Seedlings are particularly vulnerable to poor moisture management, and RHS notes fungal damping-off risk when young plants are overwatered.

Planting time follows local frost and temperature, not a universal calendar date

  Paragraphs

  • NC State advises transplanting or sowing after the last frost, and Missouri Botanical Garden likewise says to move plants outdoors once frost threat has passed. RHS recommends warm conditions and, for outdoor sowing in the UK, waits until early summer and consistently mild nights. These are regional expressions of the same physiological limitation: sweet basil is tender.

  • Gardeners should therefore use local frost dates and current weather rather than copying a planting month from a different climate. Harden young plants gradually before moving them outside, especially when they have been raised in protected indoor or greenhouse conditions.

Pinching can prolong leafy growth, but flowering is a normal part of the plant's life cycle

  Paragraphs

  • NC State recommends pinching stem tips and flower buds to encourage a bushier habit, while Missouri Botanical Garden recommends pinching centers for branching. RHS similarly advises pinching flowerheads to encourage continued leaf growth. For a culinary planting, this can delay the shift toward flowering and keep more tender shoot tips available for harvest.

  • That management choice should not be confused with plant health. Flowering itself is normal. Missouri describes summer flowers as attractive to insect pollinators, and RHS notes that basil flowers are edible. If pollinator value or seed production is the goal, allowing some stems to flower can be appropriate; if prolonged leaf harvest is the goal, regular tip harvest and pinching may be preferable.

Seed is the standard route, with cuttings also recorded by NC State

  Paragraphs

  • NC State lists both seed and stem cuttings as propagation strategies, while RHS and Missouri emphasize seed. Seed allows gardeners to raise a crop efficiently, but named cultivar identity matters: use seed that is actually sold and documented as the intended cultivar when a specific colour, habit, flavour or disease-resistance trait is important.

  • Warmth is important during germination and early growth. RHS describes germination around 20°C in its growing guide and recommends bright, warm conditions for seedlings. The exact schedule should still follow local climate and the instructions supplied with the cultivar's seed rather than a single global calendar.

• Heading

Disease resistance belongs to specific cultivars, not to sweet basil as a whole

  Paragraphs

  • NC State identifies basil downy mildew and Fusarium wilt as important disease problems and lists several cultivars selected for resistance. Missouri Botanical Garden also treats basil downy mildew as a significant foliar disease and recommends resistant varieties alongside sanitation, airflow and avoiding overhead watering. NC State additionally lists aphids and Japanese beetles as occasional insect problems; RHS notes aphids, slugs, snails and leafhoppers.

  • A resistance label should therefore stay attached to the cultivar that earned it. GardenSpecies does not call O. basilicum generally resistant because some selections perform well in disease trials. Likewise, a resistant cultivar is not a guarantee of zero disease under every environment.

Leaves and flowers have culinary use, but horticultural sources are not a licence for medical claims

  Paragraphs

  • NC State describes the leaves and flowers as edible and used for flavouring, while Missouri Botanical Garden describes sweet basil as a culinary herb and RHS gives examples such as salads, pesto and other dishes. That is appropriate context for a garden profile: it explains why the plant is commonly grown and how harvest practices connect to flowering and cultivar choice.

  • Kew also records historical and broader use categories that include medicine and poison. GardenSpecies does not translate those database categories into modern therapeutic advice. This page makes no claims that basil, basil supplements or basil essential oil treat inflammation, infection, blood sugar, immunity, detoxification or any other medical condition, and it provides no dosing guidance.

• Heading

Do not infer universal pet or human safety from a horticultural profile

  Paragraphs

  • Some horticultural pages may carry informal “non-toxic” tags or omit toxicity warnings, but GardenSpecies does not use absence of a warning as proof that every form, preparation or exposure is universally safe for people or animals. A culinary use record is not the same thing as a veterinary toxicology assessment, and concentrated essential oils are not equivalent to ordinary garden leaves.

  • If a specific ingestion or exposure question matters, use a current medical, veterinary or toxicology source that addresses the exact species, preparation and exposure. This page remains focused on plant identity and horticulture rather than treatment advice.

Widespread cultivation does not make sweet basil globally invasive or legally restricted

  Paragraphs

  • Kew records a broad introduced distribution for O. basilicum , which is unsurprising for a globally cultivated herb. Introduced presence, garden volunteering and legal invasive status are different concepts. GardenSpecies does not label sweet basil globally invasive, prohibited or unrestricted everywhere on the basis of a worldwide cultivation map.

  • Where local ecological or legal status matters, consult the current jurisdiction-specific authority. Regulations and invasive-species assessments can change and may differ among regions.

Choose the cultivar for your purpose, then give it warmth, light, moisture and drainage

  Paragraphs

  • For most home gardeners, the useful decision sequence is simple: decide whether you want classic green culinary leaves, compact container growth, ornamental purple foliage, a particular flavour profile or disease resistance; choose a cultivar documented for that purpose; then grow it in a warm, bright site with a well-drained root zone and enough moisture to avoid repeated wilting. Protect plants from frost and treat pinching as a harvest-management tool rather than a universal rule.

  • If you already grow another Mediterranean-style culinary herb, compare basil with rosemary : both value strong light, but rosemary is much more drainage- and drought-oriented while basil generally prefers steadier moisture and warmer annual-season management. For another seed-grown warm-season annual with strong cultivar diversity, see common sunflower .

Authoritative references checked 22 August 2026

  Paragraphs

  • GardenSpecies keeps source roles separate rather than blending them into a single unsupported certainty. Kew is the taxonomy/native-range baseline; NC State, Missouri Botanical Garden and RHS provide horticultural context in their own regional systems.

  • Verification note: source pages were checked on 22 August 2026. Horticultural recommendations can change with cultivar, climate, disease pressure and local regulation, so GardenSpecies preserves the source context instead of presenting one universal formula.
