Start with the accepted species, not the garden nickname

  Paragraphs

  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew accepts Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. in the family Hydrangeaceae. Kew describes it as a shrub of the temperate biome and gives a comparatively narrow native range: south-central Japan to Izu Ōshima, together with Kazan Rettō. GardenSpecies uses that Kew statement for the taxonomic native-range field rather than merging it with broader horticultural origin summaries.

  • That distinction matters because NC State Extension describes the plant more broadly as native to Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia. A gardening database may be summarising cultivated history, regional occurrence, or older treatments differently from a current taxonomic authority. Rather than invent a composite range, this page keeps the Kew range as the accepted botanical statement and retains the NC State wording only as horticultural context. The same principle applies to common names such as bigleaf hydrangea, French hydrangea, hortensia, lacecap hydrangea, and mophead hydrangea: they are useful for discovery but not substitutes for a verified scientific identity.

Moisture matters, but so does shelter from stress

  Paragraphs

  • NC State recommends dappled sunlight or partial shade and notes that bigleaf hydrangea can grow in deeper shade, while cautioning against harsh afternoon sun. Its profile lists good drainage, organic-rich conditions, and a tolerance for occasional wetness. The RHS similarly describes a moist-but-well-drained soil requirement and says the species can take sun where soil moisture remains reliable. Missouri Botanical Garden’s group-level guidance also favours rich, medium-moisture, well-drained soil in part shade, with full sun dependent on consistently moist conditions.

  • Those sources point to a practical rule rather than a fixed watering schedule: do not let the root zone remain chronically dry during active growth, but do not turn “likes moisture” into permanent saturation. Heat, container volume, soil texture, rainfall, wind, mulch, drainage, and root competition can change water demand dramatically. A plant in a cool sheltered garden can behave very differently from the same cultivar against a hot reflective wall. GardenSpecies therefore treats “water weekly” style advice as too generic for a species whose stress response depends heavily on site conditions.

Published numbers describe contexts, not a single universal plant

  Paragraphs

  • NC State gives a general mature size of roughly 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. Missouri Botanical Garden’s group record lists a broader 6 to 10 foot size, while the same page notes that plants in the St. Louis area are often around 3 to 6 feet unless winter damage or pruning keeps them smaller. The RHS gives an eventual height and spread of about 1.5 to 2.5 metres. These are not cleanly interchangeable measurements because they mix group-level, species-level, regional, and cultivated-plant contexts.

  • Hardiness guidance also diverges. NC State currently lists a very broad USDA range extending from zone 6a through 11b. Missouri Botanical Garden’s group page lists zones 5 to 11. The RHS uses its own system and rates the species H5, a UK/European hardiness context associated with approximately -15°C to -10°C minimum-temperature guidance. GardenSpecies does not convert those into a single invented zone. Named cultivars, previous-season flower-bud survival, winter wet, spring frost, heat, humidity, and microclimate all affect what “hardy” means in practice. For a real planting decision, cultivar-specific information and local extension guidance should overrule a generic range copied from another region.

Blue-versus-pink is more than a pH slogan

  Paragraphs

  • Bigleaf hydrangeas are famous for flower colour that can shift between pink, mauve, purple, and blue in some cultivars. Missouri Botanical Garden notes that soil pH affects many cultivars and that white-flowered forms generally do not follow the same colour-changing pattern. The RHS adds an important mechanism: acidity affects the availability of aluminium, and that aluminium availability is part of why naturally pink-or-blue mophead and lacecap cultivars can change expression across soils.

  • That means “acid soil makes every hydrangea blue” is an oversimplification. Cultivar genetics determine whether the flower has the capacity to shift, and soil chemistry determines whether aluminium is sufficiently available to influence pigment. White cultivars typically remain white rather than becoming blue simply because the soil is acidified. GardenSpecies does not recommend universal chemical amendment recipes because changing soil chemistry can have wider effects and local soils differ. If flower colour is a design goal, start with the named cultivar, test the actual soil, and use regionally appropriate horticultural guidance rather than dosing by a generic internet formula.

Know whether your cultivar depends on old wood

  Paragraphs

  • NC State explains that many bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on the previous year’s growth, commonly called old wood. It also distinguishes reblooming cultivars that can produce additional flowers later on new growth. That difference is central to pruning: removing too much previous-season stem can remove the buds that would have produced the next display. The RHS shrubby-hydrangea guide likewise recommends relatively light pruning for established mopheads and lacecaps and explains that their flowers arise from new shoots growing from the previous year’s stems.

  • Winter injury creates another layer of uncertainty. A shrub can survive cold temperatures yet lose exposed flower buds, leaving healthy foliage but few flowers. Reblooming cultivars may compensate better because some can flower from new-season growth, but that behaviour is cultivar-specific. The safest general advice is to identify the cultivar before making hard pruning decisions, remove dead or damaged material selectively, and use local timing guidance. GardenSpecies will not label all H. macrophylla as either strictly old-wood or universally reblooming.

A flexible landscape shrub with cultivar-dependent form

  Paragraphs

  • NC State lists layering and stem cuttings among recommended propagation strategies, while the RHS specifically describes softwood cuttings in early summer and hardwood cuttings in winter. Vegetative propagation is particularly relevant for named cultivars because it preserves the selected plant’s traits more predictably than seed. GardenSpecies keeps the method at this reference level rather than prescribing an exact calendar for every climate.

  • The species is widely used as a foundation shrub, hedge, mass planting, patio accent, container subject, and shade-garden feature. Lacecap and mophead flower forms create noticeably different visual effects, and compact cultivars can fit spaces where older large forms would be unsuitable. Because mature size, bloom colour, repeat flowering, and cold performance can differ substantially among cultivars, the species page should be treated as the starting point for selection rather than a promise that every plant sold as “bigleaf hydrangea” will behave the same way.

Keep ornamental familiarity separate from ingestion safety

  Paragraphs

  • NC State marks Hydrangea macrophylla as having low-severity poison characteristics and identifies hydracyanosides, or cyanogenic glycosides, as the toxic principle. Its profile associates harmful ingestion with plant parts including bark, flowers, and leaves and flags concerns for humans as well as cats, dogs, and horses. The RHS separately marks the species as potentially harmful, advises protective handling because of a skin-allergen warning, and states that it can be harmful to cats and dogs if eaten.

  • This page is horticultural reference material, not medical or veterinary advice. If a person or animal may have eaten hydrangea or has symptoms after exposure, use an appropriate poison-control, medical, or veterinary service. GardenSpecies also makes no blanket invasive or regulatory declaration for bigleaf hydrangea. Introduced status and local rules can vary by jurisdiction, so government, extension, conservation, or invasive-species authorities should be checked where planting restrictions or ecological status matter.

Choose the cultivar and the site together

  Paragraphs

  • The overlap among NC State, Missouri Botanical Garden, and RHS guidance points to a fairly clear site profile: protected conditions, dependable moisture, good drainage, and relief from the most punishing sun are safer general choices than a hot dry exposure. But that still leaves major cultivar choices. A gardener seeking reliable flowering after cold winters may value a reblooming cultivar; a small garden may need a compact selection; a colour-focused planting needs a cultivar capable of responding to aluminium availability; and a white-flowered form should not be purchased with an expectation that soil chemistry will turn it blue.

  • For that reason GardenSpecies treats the species record as a map of constraints and variation, not a one-size-fits-all recipe. Future cultivar pages can attach cultivar-specific dimensions, flower form, colour behaviour, bloom-on-new-wood claims, regional trials, and primary-image provenance without silently changing the baseline species facts documented here.
